Overview

The Cayman Islands' Virtual Asset (Service Providers) Act, effective from 2020, requires virtual-asset service providers to register or be licensed with the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA), with a phased licensing regime for custody and trading platforms.

Regulatory framework

The VASP Act covers registration and, for custody and trading platforms, licensing, with AML supervision by CIMA.

Licensing & authorisation

VASPs register with CIMA; custodians and trading platforms require a licence.

AML & Travel Rule

AML/CFT obligations and a Travel Rule apply to VASPs.
