Overview

The Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) gives the EU one harmonised rulebook for crypto-asset service providers (CASPs) and token issuers across all member states. It has applied in full since December 2024, with ESMA and the EBA setting technical standards and national competent authorities authorising firms.

Regulatory framework

MiCA covers CASP authorisation, asset-referenced and e-money tokens, market-abuse rules and disclosure; the Transfer of Funds Regulation (TFR) implements the Travel Rule.

Licensing & authorisation

A single CASP authorisation from any member state passports across the EEA; ART/EMT issuers face additional requirements.

AML & Travel Rule

The TFR requires originator and beneficiary information on all CASP transfers, with no de-minimis threshold.
